Mediterranean life
The Mediterranean Diet is a no fad approach to food and lifestyle. The diet is strongly associated with the reduction and prevention of inflammatory markets in the body usually seen with cardiovascular and cholesterol related diseases. A typical day on a plate includes:
colour for varied nutrient content. A good looking plate of food also initiates digestion by kick starting gastric acid and saliva secretions.
Loads of vegetables to not only provide nutrients but also fibre and carbohydrates. Fibre assists in ‘mopping’ up fat and toxins to be eliminated.
A good source of protein for building and repair. Think fish - responsibly sourced salmon is a nice choice, however sardines are a convenient and economical option. A fish with reduced heavy metal content (smaller fish) is ideal. Vegans can get their proteins from beans, legumes, rice and nuts (pairing appropriately).
Herbs! Fresh is best. I love basil! But other choices where you can’t go wrong, especially leading into the winter months include thyme, oregano and sage. And of course garlic!
Olive oil!! Olive oil is high in omega 3’s and if cooked on low heat or kept raw has anti inflammatory properties. Try not to burn your oil as it changes the chemical structure. Choose a cold pressed, non refined oil.
Heavy bread and pasta consumption was not always a part of the traditional Mediterranean diet, but still enjoy in portions that are comfortable for you to digest. Choose sourdough and a pasta that contains minimal ingredients. And red wine??……..One of the reasons red wine is thought to be a beneficial inclusion in the Mediterranean diet is due to its ability to stimulate joy over a social dinner table setting and is consumed in small amounts. The Mediterranean diet was also traditionally ingested alongside a lifestyle that required lots of walking therefore incorporated exercise and social interaction.
Overall, abundance is key. Eating lots of healthy, properly sourced food cooked with purpose and enjoyment will encourage a good relationship with food.
